Baby Bug Lab
Over the last couple of weeks we have been working on understanding genetics and how genetic material is given from parent to offspring. In order to model this, we observed the phenotypes of our parent bugs and calculated the probability of certain genetic traits being passed on by using Punnett Squares.

Mitosis vs. Meiosis
Before winter break we started probably our most difficult unit in science, Heredity and Genetics.
We used our knowledge of cells from earlier in the year and learned how cells reproduce and divide by two processes: mitosis or meiosis!
In order to really understand these difficult topics we learned a dance sequence and showed the process using students in our classroom!

Mayo Clinic - Infection Control
Today we visited the Mayo clinic and learned all about the history of surgery and current methods for infection control.
We learned about how science has changed since the 1670's from the first use of pain relieving medication to the use of tourniquets during wartime amputations. We learned about the scientists who influenced these discoveries and how they have helped transform scientific medicine to what it is today.
"For centuries, surgery dealt mainly with wounds of battle or daily life. War is good for surgery science if nothing else."
We watched a video of Dr. Huiras completing a surgery to patch a neck artery and removing an appendix.
We learned about how hospitals keep germs at bay and protect their patients by playing a game involving PPE (Personal Protective Equipment).

We learned about how doctors and nurses keep the operating room sterile during surgery by wearing masks and gowns.
We got to visit a negative pressure room where patients with airborne illness would stay and learned how to set a heart rate monitor based on the patient's baseline data to watch for a heart attack. Something nurses do almost everyday!
